The first Routes America Awards were presented at the Indiana Rooftop Ballroom on 5 February 2020 where the overall winner was crowned International Airport of Myrtle Beach (MYR).
The awards are highly valued in the aviation industry in recognition of marketing services supporting both new and existing air services. The awards also support excellence and innovation among the road development community.
The panel of judges included senior network planners from Alaska Airlines, Air Canada, Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines, among others.
Myrtle Beach International has been named the overall winner and has also won the category of passengers under 4 million.
The airport witnessed a successful year in 2019, with demand expansion on 15 routes and an innovative strategy contributing to non-stop air services from over 45 markets.
After being appointed the Overall Winner of the ceremony, Scott Van Moppes, Airports Manager, said: “We are proud to be respected by the airline industry for what we do at International Airport of Myrtle Beach. Our success is no more recognized than earning the Routes Americas Awards 2020!”
It is the second time in three years that the South Carolina airport has been named the overall winner after being awarded the prize at Routes Americas 2018 in Quito, Ecuador, two years ago.
Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS) has won the category of 4-20 million passengers following the busiest ever year at the airport.
In 2019, nine carriers started or announced 24 new routes, including Calgary (YYC) service from West Jet and Frankfurt (FRA) connection from Lufthansa.
Sao Paulo-Guarulhos (GRU) has potentially won over 20 million passenger categories, which saw a 2.8% rise in 2019 to crack the 43 million passenger barrier for the first time.
Five new international airport services have been provided, including flights to Munich and Montreal.
Awarded to the Aruba Airport Authority for its excellent performance in digital marketing campaigns and airline engagement via the Route Exchange platform, the final award of the night was the Route Exchange Award.
